Be a Role Model and Inspire Others to Do the Right Thing

Do the right thing

Tuesday morning on a busy train to the Brisbane city. Everyone leaves their seats next to them vacant and puts their bag/backpack next to them to comply to social distance requirements, and ironically, all the unlucky ones who don't have a seat are cramped in a little area near the exists. Everyone who has a seat is busy looking at their phones and laptops ignoring what is happening around them. A pregnant woman is entering the train looking for a seat but no-one offers their seat. She seems to be used to this and does not even bother to have eye contact with someone occupying a priority seat. A few stops later a few people get off and a few seats become vacant. People are rushing to them. The pregnant woman does not even bother to participate in this race. A middle-aged gentleman goes to the last remaining seat but before he takes a seat, he waves at the pregnant woman to indicate that the seat is for her. The pregnant lady is unsure and ask him multiple times if he is sure and walks eventually to the seat and thanks him. There are very good, well mannered and kind people out there. I don't know the man but his actions say what kind of human he is. May this inspire others to do the right thing and be kinder to one another without asking for anything in return.

Be a Role Model by Doing the Right Thing. If you want to live in a better world it starts with you and your own actions.

Reflection Questions

  • In what kind of world do I want to live in?

  • What are the little things I can do today to create a “better world”?

  • What values and principles are important to me, and how do I live and demonstrate them through my actions?

  • Do I know what the “right thing” is?

  • What is holding me back to do the “right thing”? Is it others? Or the fear of being judged or missing out?

  • How do I make “doing the right thing” a habit and an automatic response?

  • What causes are important to me and how do I support them? Is that fairness and justice? Community and kindness? Environment and sustainability?

  • How and how often do I support the causes - no matter how small or big my contribution is?

  • What kind of person do I want to be?

  • What do I want to be known for? What legacy do I want to leave behind?

  • How can I be a better colleague and manager or team member?

  • How can I be a better partner, parent, sibling, child and friend?
